it is a constant battle to feel represented, wanted and/or needed in the punk scene and also in everyday life. In a scene, in a city, and in a world that is dominated by white males, it is hard to feel important. While 'white punx' try to acknowledge their privileges, and recognize how they take up space it is not enough. Often, We (as PoC/QPoC) are pushed to the side and told when it s appropriate to speak out about racism. An initial response to racism in the scene is to feel guilty but this guilt is an emotional self pitying time out. It itself is privilege within itself, leading into being passive aggressive and essentially doing nothing. This guilt, white guilt, will never be enough.
lyrics
DIY, Kill the White Devil
White boys,
Do you realize the space you take up,
the audience you reach
and the changes only you can make
White Boys,
White boys what are you afraid of?
Step the fuck down.
